Definition

Let ๐”ค\mathfrak g be a Lie algebra over a field kk. An ideal of ๐”ค\mathfrak g is a linear subspace ๐”žโІ๐”ค\mathfrak a \subseteq \mathfrak g such that [x,a]โˆˆ๐”ž[x, a] \in \mathfrak a for all xโˆˆ๐”คx \in \mathfrak g and aโˆˆ๐”ža \in \mathfrak a.

Remarks

Since [a,x]=โˆ’[x,a][a, x] = -[x, a], there is no difference between left and right ideals. Every ideal is a Lie subalgebra. If ๐”ž\mathfrak a is an ideal, the quotient space ๐”ค/๐”ž\mathfrak g / \mathfrak a is a Lie algebra with [x+๐”ž,y+๐”ž]=[x,y]+๐”ž[x + \mathfrak a, y + \mathfrak a] = [x, y] + \mathfrak a.

Example: ๐”ฐ๐”ฉn(k)\mathfrak{sl}_n(k), the trace-zero matrices, is an ideal of ๐”ค๐”ฉn(k)\mathfrak{gl}_n(k). For all X,YX, Y one has trโก(XY)=trโก(YX)\tr(XY) = \tr(YX), so trโก[X,Y]=0\tr [X, Y] = 0, and [X,Y]โˆˆ๐”ฐ๐”ฉn(k)[X, Y] \in \mathfrak{sl}_n(k).

Non-example: in ๐”ฐ๐”ฉ2(k)\mathfrak{sl}_2(k) with charโกkโ‰ 2\operatorname{char} k \ne 2, take h=(100โˆ’1)h = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix} and e=(0100)e = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix}. The line khk h is a subalgebra but not an ideal, because [e,h]=โˆ’2e[e, h] = -2e is not a multiple of hh.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
