Definition
Let and be morphisms in a category . The morphism has the left lifting property with respect to if this holds. For all morphisms and with , there is a morphism with and . In that case is said to have the right lifting property with respect to . If the morphism is always unique, and are orthogonal.
Remarks
The data form a commutative square, and is a diagonal filler of the square. A common notation is , or for orthogonality. Fix a class of morphisms. The morphisms with the left lifting property with respect to all members of contain all isomorphisms and are closed under composition.
Example: in the category of sets, let and let be surjective. A square is then just a point of , and a filler is a point of with . It exists since is surjective.
Non-example: with the same , let . Take the empty map and ; a filler would be a map , which does not exist.
In topology, a Hurewicz fibration is a map with the right lifting property with respect to all inclusions ; this is the homotopy lifting property.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
