statement proposition

Limit of a sum of sequences

Statement

Let (an)(a_n) and (bn)(b_n) be real sequences, and let aa and bb be real numbers. If an→aa_n \to a and bn→bb_n \to b as n→∞n \to \infty, then an+bn→a+ba_n + b_n \to a + b as n→∞n \to \infty.

Remarks

Given ε>0\varepsilon > 0, choose NN so that ∣an−a∣<ε/2|a_n - a| < \varepsilon/2 and ∣bn−b∣<ε/2|b_n - b| < \varepsilon/2 for all n≥Nn \ge N. The triangle inequality then gives ∣(an+bn)−(a+b)∣<ε|(a_n + b_n) - (a + b)| < \varepsilon. With the constant sequence −1-1 and the product rule for limits, it also gives an−bn→a−ba_n - b_n \to a - b. It is one of the rules of the algebra of limits.

Explanations

L1 human

If ana_n is close to aa and bnb_n is close to bb, then an+bna_n + b_n is close to a+ba + b. The two errors add, so we make each error smaller than half of the allowed error.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Sequence definition
  2. Real sequence definition
  3. Limit of a sequence definition
  4. Epsilon-N definition of the limit of a sequence statement
  5. Limit of a sum of sequences statement

What depends on this

5 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
