Algebra of limits

Summary

The algebra of limits is a set of rules for limits of convergent sequences. The rules give the limit of a sum, a product or a quotient from the limits of the parts. If an→aa_n \to a and bn→bb_n \to b, then an+bn→a+ba_n + b_n \to a + b, anbn→aba_n b_n \to a b, and an/bn→a/ba_n / b_n \to a / b when b≠0b \ne 0. These rules let us find many limits from a few known ones.

Remarks

The rules are the nodes limit of a sum of sequences, limit of a product of sequences and limit of a quotient of sequences. Similar rules hold for the limit of a function.

Explanations

L1 human

To find the limit of (2n+1)/(n+3)(2n + 1)/(n + 3), divide the numerator and the denominator by nn to get (2+1/n)/(1+3/n)(2 + 1/n)/(1 + 3/n). Since 1/n→01/n \to 0, the rules give the limit (2+0)/(1+0)=2(2 + 0)/(1 + 0) = 2.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
