Line graph
Definition
Let be a graph. The line graph of is the graph whose vertex set is the edge set of . Two distinct edges are adjacent in if and only if they have a common endpoint.
Remarks
If is an edge of , its degree in is . Example: the cycle graph with has , since each edge meets exactly the two edges next to it around the cycle. Also : the three edges of the star share the centre, so they are pairwise adjacent. Non-example: the star is itself not the line graph of any graph. Indeed, suppose a vertex of had three pairwise non-adjacent neighbours. These would be three edges meeting , so two of them would meet at the same endpoint, and these two would be adjacent. Whitney showed that two connected graphs with isomorphic line graphs are isomorphic, except for the pair and .
