Linear first-order equation
Definition
Let be an open interval and let be continuous functions. The linear first-order equation with coefficient and right side is the equation for an unknown differentiable function . It is homogeneous if on , and inhomogeneous otherwise.
Remarks
The solution formula gives each solution explicitly, with an integrating factor. The homogeneous equation has the solutions , where is an antiderivative of and is a constant. Many authors write the equation as , with and .
Explanations
L1 human
The equation is linear because and appear only to the first power, with coefficients that depend on . There is no product such as and no function such as . This structure is the reason why there is a formula for all the solutions.
