Definition
Let be an open set in and let . A linear partial differential equation of order in is a partial differential equation of the following form. Here the sum runs over multi-indices . The coefficients and the right-hand side are given functions on , and is not identically zero for some with . The map is the associated linear differential operator. The equation is homogeneous if and inhomogeneous otherwise. It has constant coefficients if every is constant.
Remarks
Example: on is linear of order , with coefficients , and . Non-example: is not linear, because the term is not a coefficient times . For a homogeneous linear equation the solutions in form a vector space. For an inhomogeneous equation, any two solutions differ by a solution of the homogeneous equation. In short notation the equation reads .
