Definition

Let AA be a commutative ring. A topology on AA is linear if it satisfies both conditions:

  1. With this topology, AA is a topological ring.
  2. The open ideals of AA form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 00: every neighbourhood of 00 contains an open ideal.

More generally, let MM be an AA-module and give AA a linear topology. A topology on MM is linear if MM is a topological group under addition and the scalar multiplication A×M→MA \times M \to M is continuous. In addition, the open submodules of MM must form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 00.

Remarks

Equivalently, a linear topology on AA is given by a family ℱ\mathcal{F} of ideals such that each intersection I∩JI \cap J of two members contains a member. A set UU is then open when for each x∈Ux \in U there is I∈ℱI \in \mathcal{F} with x+I⊆Ux + I \subseteq U.

Example: for an ideal II of AA, the I-adic topology has the powers InI^n as a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 00. Each InI^n is an open ideal, so clause 2 holds; addition and multiplication are continuous because (x+In)+(y+In)=x+y+In(x + I^n) + (y + I^n) = x + y + I^n and (x+In)(y+In)⊆xy+In(x + I^n)(y + I^n) \subseteq xy + I^n. The discrete topology is linear, with the zero ideal open.

Non-example: the usual topology on ℝ\R makes ℝ\R a topological ring, so clause 1 holds. But the only ideals of the field ℝ\R are 00 and ℝ\R. The set {0}\set{0} is not open, and the interval (−1,1)(-1, 1) does not contain ℝ\R; so clause 2 fails.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
