Linearly disjoint extensions

Summary

Let EE and FF be extensions of a field KK inside a common field. They are linearly disjoint over KK when elements of EE that are linearly independent over KK stay independent over FF. Equivalently, the natural map from the tensor product E⊗KFE \otimes_K F to the common field is injective. For finite extensions this means that the degree of the compositum is as large as possible: [EF:F]=[E:K][EF:F] = [E:K]. The notion is the field version of independence, and it is used to compute degrees and Galois groups of composita.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
