Definition
Let be a field and let , and be subfields of with and . The fields and are linearly disjoint over if the following holds. Every finite family of elements of that is linearly independent over is linearly independent over .
Remarks
The definition is symmetric in and . It holds if and only if the -linear map with is injective, where is the tensor product. If is finite, it holds if and only if , where is the compositum. If is finite Galois, it holds if and only if .
Example: and in are linearly disjoint over . Check: has degree over , so .
Non-example: let , and . Then , but has degree , so . Hence the -basis of is linearly dependent over .
