Compositum of fields
Definition
Let be a field and let and be subfields of . The compositum of and is the intersection of all subfields of that contain . More generally, the compositum of a family of subfields of is the intersection of all subfields of containing every member.
Remarks
The compositum is the smallest subfield of containing and , so in the notation of fields generated by adjoining elements. Its elements are the quotients with , where and are finite sums of products with and . If and is finite, then .
Example: in , the compositum of and is . Check: this field contains and , and any subfield of containing and contains .
Non-example: the union is not the compositum, because it is not a field. Indeed lies in neither nor .
