Definition
Let be a finite graph. A list assignment for is a map that assigns to each vertex a finite set of colours. An -colouring of is a map on such that:
- for every vertex .
- for every edge .
For an integer , the graph is -choosable if it has an -colouring for every list assignment with for all . The choice number is the least such that is -choosable.
Remarks
If all lists equal , an -colouring is a proper colouring with colours, so , where is the chromatic number. Example: every tree is -choosable. Colour the vertices in an order in which each vertex after the first has exactly one earlier neighbour. Each vertex then picks a colour of its list other than the colour of that neighbour. Non-example: is not -choosable, although . Give the vertices on each side the lists , and . The colours used on one side meet each of these three sets, so they include at least two colours. Two of these colours form the list of some vertex on the other side, and that vertex fails clause 2. Thomassen proved that every planar graph is -choosable. Choice number is also called list chromatic number and written .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
