Definition
Let , and be topological spaces and let be a continuous map. Let be an open subset of , and give the product topology. A local trivialization of over with fiber is a homeomorphism such that on , where is the first projection.
Remarks
Example: let , and . Then over is a local trivialization with fiber , since it is a homeomorphism and its first coordinate is .
Non-example: for the double cover , , there is no local trivialization over with fiber a two-point space, since is connected and is not. Over each proper open arc, however, such a trivialization exists.
The map is a fiber bundle with fiber exactly when the open sets carrying a local trivialization cover . If and are local trivializations, then on has the form , and the maps are the transition functions.
