Definition
Let and be finite-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces, and write for the operators on a space . A local instrument of party is a finite family of completely positive maps on whose sum preserves the trace. Local instruments of party are defined in the same way on . The set of LOCC channels on is the smallest set of maps with these properties:
- For all quantum channels on and on , the map is an LOCC channel.
- If is a local instrument of and each is an LOCC channel, then is an LOCC channel.
- If is a local instrument of and each is an LOCC channel, then is an LOCC channel.
In clauses 2 and 3, one party measures, announces the outcome , and the protocol continues with .
Remarks
Example: Alice measures her qubit in the basis and Bob applies the flip when the outcome is . With and , where , the map is . Each is LOCC by clause 1, so the map is LOCC by clause 2.
Non-example: the controlled-NOT gate on maps the product state to the entangled state . Every LOCC channel maps separable states to separable states, so this gate is not LOCC.
Every LOCC channel is a separable operation: it has Kraus operators of product form . The converse fails: there are separable operations that are not LOCC. Some authors also allow countably many rounds, or take the closure of the set of LOCC channels.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
