Log mean temperature difference
Builds on Heat exchanger theoryTemperatureHeat transfer coefficient
Definition
Consider a heat exchanger with parallel flow or counterflow. Let and be the temperature differences between the hot and the cold stream at the two ends. The log mean temperature difference is and if .
Remarks
The value at is the limit of the formula, so is a continuous function of . It lies between the geometric and the arithmetic mean: .
Example: K and K give K, which lies between K and K.
Non-example: suppose the cold stream leaves at the inlet temperature of the hot stream. Then at that end, the positivity condition fails, and is not defined. Such an exchanger would need infinite area.
For parallel flow or counterflow with constant overall heat transfer coefficient and area , the heat rate is . For crossflow and multipass exchangers one multiplies the counterflow value by a correction factor .
