Example

Let μ∈ℝ\mu \in \R and σ>0\sigma > 0, and let YY be normal with mean μ\mu and variance σ2\sigma^2. The law of X=eYX = e^Y is the log-normal distribution with parameters μ\mu and σ2\sigma^2; so X>0X > 0 and ln⁡X\ln X is normal. Its density is f(x)=1xσ2πexp⁡(−(ln⁡x−μ)22σ2)(x>0),f(x) = \frac{1}{x \sigma \sqrt{2\pi}} \exp\left(-\frac{(\ln x - \mu)^2}{2 \sigma^2}\right) \qquad (x > 0), and f(x)=0f(x) = 0 for x≤0x \le 0. Check: for 0<a<b0 < a < b, P(a<X<b)=P(ln⁡a<Y<ln⁡b)P(a < X < b) = P(\ln a < Y < \ln b), and the substitution y=ln⁡xy = \ln x, dy=dx/xdy = dx / x, turns the normal density of YY into ff. The moments are E[Xn]=E[enY]=enμ+n2σ2/2E[X^n] = E[e^{nY}] = e^{n\mu + n^2 \sigma^2 / 2} for every real nn, by the moment-generating function of the normal law. So E[X]=eμ+σ2/2E[X] = e^{\mu + \sigma^2/2} and Var⁡(X)=(eσ2−1)e2μ+σ2\operatorname{Var}(X) = (e^{\sigma^2} - 1) e^{2\mu + \sigma^2}. The median is eμe^{\mu}, which is smaller than the mean.

Remarks

All moments are finite, but the moment-generating function E[etX]E[e^{tX}] is infinite for every t>0t > 0. The log-normal law is a standard example of a distribution that is not determined by its moments: other distributions have exactly the same moments. If X1X_1 and X2X_2 are independent and log-normal, then X1X2X_1 X_2 is log-normal, because ln⁡X1+ln⁡X2\ln X_1 + \ln X_2 is normal.
