Definition
Consider a superconductor in whose superconducting charge carriers have charge , mass and number density . Let be the supercurrent density, the electric field and the magnetic field. The London equations are where is the curl. The London penetration depth is , where is the vacuum permeability.
Remarks
In a static situation, Ampère's law from Maxwell's equations and turn the second equation into . Example: let the superconductor fill and let with and bounded. The equation becomes , whose bounded solution is . Then , and one checks . Non-example: a perfect conductor obeys the first equation but not the second. For it, decays inside, so the field is frozen in, but a field present before cooling is not expelled. With the vector potential in the London gauge, the two equations combine into .
