Definition
Let be a field and let be a Lie algebra over . Let be the ring of Laurent polynomials in one variable . The loop algebra of is the vector space , a tensor product, with the bracket for and , extended bilinearly.
Remarks
On the basis elements the bracket reads . It is antisymmetric and satisfies the Jacobi identity because the bracket of does and is commutative and associative.
Example: for with basis , the loop algebra has basis , , for . For instance .
Non-example: in the affine Lie algebra one has with a nonzero central element and a nonzero invariant form value . This bracket is not of the form , so the affine algebra is a central extension of the loop algebra and not a loop algebra itself.
The subalgebra is often called the current algebra . Over one often writes for this algebra of polynomial loops and uses other names for completions, such as smooth loops .
