Definition
Let be a ring with identity. Let , where is the general linear group and embeds in . Let be the subgroup generated by the elementary matrices , , . The matrix has on the diagonal, in position and elsewhere. The lower K-groups of are the following three abelian groups.
- , the Grothendieck group of finitely generated projective left -modules under direct sum.
- .
- . Here the Steinberg group has generators , positive integers, , and the following relations. They are , for , and for and . The map sends to .
Remarks
By Whitehead's lemma, is the commutator subgroup of , so is abelian. The group is the center of , so it is abelian too.
Example: for a field , by the dimension, and the determinant gives , because is the group of matrices of determinant . For a finite field , .
Non-example: for a fixed is not in general, and for it need not even be a group. The passage to the limit is part of the definition.
