Lumped-element thermal model
Builds on Heat transfer coefficientHeat capacityBiot numberOrdinary differential equation
Definition
Let a solid body have volume , surface area , density and specific heat capacity . Let it exchange heat with a fluid at constant temperature . Let be the heat transfer coefficient on its surface. The lumped-element thermal model assumes that the temperature of the body is uniform, equal to at time . It is the ordinary differential equation
Remarks
The solution with is , with time constant . Indeed , which is the equation divided by .
Example: a ball with seconds, and degrees Celsius reaches degrees Celsius after seconds.
Non-example: a thick block of wood cooled in strong wind has a large Biot number. Its centre stays much hotter than its surface, so the uniform temperature assumption fails.
The usual criterion for the model is with length .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
