Lusternik–Schnirelmann category
Definition
Let be a topological space. An open subset is contractible in if the inclusion is null-homotopic. The Lusternik–Schnirelmann category is the least integer such that there is an open cover by open sets, each contractible in . If no such finite cover exists, .
Remarks
This is the normalized convention; some authors count the open sets instead, which adds . If is a path-connected space, is a commutative ring, and has elements of positive degree with nonzero cup product, then . The category is a homotopy invariant.
Example: for , . The sets and , where and are the poles, cover and are homeomorphic to , hence contractible, hence contractible in . And , since the identity of is not null-homotopic.
Non-example: the cover of by the single open set does not show , since the inclusion is the identity, which is not null-homotopic.
Other values: the torus and the real projective space both have category .
