Statement

Let GG be a second countable locally compact group, and let HH be a closed subgroup of GG. Let π\pi be a unitary representation of GG on a Hilbert space ℋ\mathcal{H}. A system of imprimitivity for π\pi based on G/HG/H is a projection-valued measure PP on the Borel sets of G/HG/H, acting on ℋ\mathcal{H}. It must satisfy π(g)P(E)π(g)−1=P(gE)\pi(g) P(E) \pi(g)^{-1} = P(gE) for all g∈Gg \in G and all Borel sets E⊆G/HE \subseteq G/H. Every induced representation Ind⁡HGσ\operatorname{Ind}_H^G \sigma has a canonical system of imprimitivity, where P(E)P(E) multiplies a function by the indicator of EE. Let (π,P)(\pi, P) be any system of imprimitivity based on G/HG/H. Then there is a unitary representation σ\sigma of HH such that (π,P)(\pi, P) is unitarily equivalent to the canonical system of Ind⁡HGσ\operatorname{Ind}_H^G \sigma. The representation σ\sigma is unique up to unitary equivalence.

Remarks

In operator-algebra terms, a system of imprimitivity is a covariant representation of the action of GG on C0(G/H)C_0(G/H). Such pairs correspond to representations of the crossed product C0(G/H)⋊GC_0(G/H) \rtimes G. This crossed product is Morita equivalent to the group C∗C^*-algebra of HH, and this equivalence gives one modern proof.

Example: take G=ℝG = \R and H={0}H = \set{0}, so G/H=ℝG/H = \R. A system of imprimitivity is a unitary group π(t)\pi(t) together with a self-adjoint operator QQ, through the spectral measure PP of QQ. The covariance condition is the Weyl form of the canonical commutation relation. The theorem says that every such pair is a multiple of translations and multiplication by xx on L2(ℝ)L^2(\R). This is the Stone–von Neumann theorem.

The theorem also gives a criterion for being induced: π\pi is induced from HH exactly when it admits a system of imprimitivity based on G/HG/H.

Going deeper

For a student

The imprimitivity theorem is the engine of the Mackey machine. If NN is a closed abelian normal subgroup, the spectral measure of π∣N\pi|_N lives on the dual N^\widehat{N}, and GG permutes it. When π\pi is irreducible and the action is regular, this measure sits on one orbit G/GχG/G_\chi, and the theorem shows that π\pi is induced from the stabiliser GχG_\chi. Wigner's classification of the particles through representations of the Poincaré group is an instance.
