Definition

Let G=N⋊HG = N \rtimes H be a second countable locally compact group, with NN closed, normal and abelian, and HH closed. Let N^\widehat{N} be the group of continuous characters χ ⁣:N→{z∈ℂ:∣z∣=1}\chi \colon N \to \set{z \in \C : \abs{z} = 1}. The group HH acts on N^\widehat{N} by (h⋅χ)(n)=χ(h−1nh)(h \cdot \chi)(n) = \chi(h^{-1} n h). For χ∈N^\chi \in \widehat{N}, let HχH_\chi be its stabiliser in HH, and let σ\sigma be an irreducible unitary representation of HχH_\chi. The formula (χ⊗σ)(nh)=χ(n)σ(h)(\chi \otimes \sigma)(n h) = \chi(n) \sigma(h) for n∈Nn \in N and h∈Hχh \in H_\chi defines a unitary representation of N⋊HχN \rtimes H_\chi. The Mackey machine assigns to the pair (χ,σ)(\chi, \sigma) the induced representation πχ,σ=Ind⁡N⋊HχG(χ⊗σ).\pi_{\chi, \sigma} = \operatorname{Ind}_{N \rtimes H_\chi}^{G} (\chi \otimes \sigma).

Remarks

Mackey's theorem: suppose the action of HH on N^\widehat{N} is regular, meaning that the orbit space N^/H\widehat{N}/H is countably separated. Then each πχ,σ\pi_{\chi, \sigma} is irreducible, and every irreducible unitary representation of GG is equivalent to some πχ,σ\pi_{\chi, \sigma}. Two of them are equivalent exactly when the characters lie in one orbit and the representations σ\sigma correspond under conjugation.

Example: the ax+bax + b group G=ℝ⋊ℝ>0G = \R \rtimes \R_{>0}, where a>0a > 0 acts on ℝ\R by b↦abb \mapsto ab. Here N^≅ℝ\widehat{N} \cong \R through χξ(b)=eiξb\chi_\xi(b) = e^{i \xi b}, and aa sends χξ\chi_\xi to χξ/a\chi_{\xi / a}. There are three orbits: {0}\set{0}, (0,∞)(0, \infty) and (−∞,0)(-\infty, 0). The orbit {0}\set{0} has stabiliser ℝ>0\R_{>0} and gives the one-dimensional characters of ℝ>0\R_{>0}, trivial on NN. The other two orbits have trivial stabiliser and give two infinite-dimensional irreducible representations Ind⁡NGχ±1\operatorname{Ind}_N^G \chi_{\pm 1}.

Non-example: let A=(2111)A = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} act on N=ℤ2N = \Z^2, and let G=ℤ2⋊AℤG = \Z^2 \rtimes_A \Z. Then N^\widehat{N} is the torus ℝ2/ℤ2\R^2 / \Z^2, and the dual action of AA on it is ergodic, so the orbit space is not countably separated. The regularity hypothesis fails, and some irreducible unitary representations of GG are not of the form πχ,σ\pi_{\chi, \sigma}.
