Statement

Let FF be the free group on a set XX, and let r∈Fr \in F be a cyclically reduced word. Let G=⟨X∣r⟩G = \langle X \mid r \rangle be the one-relator group it defines. Let YY be a subset of XX that does not contain some generator that occurs in rr. Then the subgroup of GG generated by the images of the elements of YY is free, and these images form a free basis of it.

Remarks

Magnus proved the theorem by induction on the length of rr. After a change of generators, GG is written as an HNN extension or an amalgamated product of one-relator groups with shorter relators, and the induction applies to them. The same method shows that the word problem of one-relator groups is solvable.

Example: in ℤ2=⟨a,b∣aba−1b−1⟩\Z^2 = \langle a, b \mid a b a^{-1} b^{-1} \rangle, the theorem says that aa generates an infinite cyclic subgroup, a free group of rank 11. In the Baumslag–Solitar group ⟨a,b∣bab−1a−2⟩\langle a, b \mid b a b^{-1} a^{-2} \rangle, both aa and bb have infinite order.

The word rr must be cyclically reduced. For r=bab−1r = b a b^{-1}, which contains bb, the group ⟨a,b∣bab−1⟩\langle a, b \mid b a b^{-1} \rangle is infinite cyclic generated by bb, and a=1a = 1 in it. So {a}\set{a} omits bb, but aa does not generate a free group of rank 11. The cyclic reduction of rr is aa, which does not contain bb.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the starting point of the theory of one-relator groups. Magnus's method of writing a one-relator group as an HNN extension of a group with a shorter relator is the main tool of the area. Suppose that rr is cyclically reduced and that every generator in XX occurs in rr. Then every proper subset of XX is a free basis of a free subgroup of GG.
