Definition
Let and be topological spaces, let , and let be a continuous map. The mapping cylinder of is the space where has the product topology and is the disjoint union. The relation is the smallest equivalence relation with for all . The space carries the quotient topology.
Remarks
The map , , is an embedding, and embeds in as well. The map with and is a homotopy equivalence, is a strong deformation retract of , and . Example: for a point, is the cone . Example: for , is homeomorphic to . Non-example: the space without the identification is not ; for and nonempty it is disconnected even when and are connected, while is then connected.
