Description
The Mathieu groups are five finite simple groups, written , , , and . Each is a permutation group on points. Their orders are:
- ,
- ,
- ,
- ,
- .
They are sporadic groups: they belong to none of the infinite families of finite simple groups.
Remarks
The Mathieu groups are highly multiply transitive. is sharply -transitive on points, and is sharply -transitive on points. is -transitive on points, is -transitive on points, and is -transitive on points. Apart from the symmetric and alternating groups, , , and are the only finite -transitive groups. The stabiliser of a point in is , and the stabiliser of a point in is ; likewise the stabiliser of a point in is . is the automorphism group of the Steiner system and of the extended binary Golay code, and is the automorphism group of the Steiner system . They were the first sporadic simple groups to be found, by Émile Mathieu in the nineteenth century.
