Definition

Let a group GG act on a set Ω\Omega, and let kk be a positive integer with k≤∣Ω∣k \le \abs{\Omega}. The action is kk-transitive if for all kk-tuples (x1,…,xk)(x_1, \dots, x_k) and (y1,…,yk)(y_1, \dots, y_k) of pairwise distinct elements of Ω\Omega there is g∈Gg \in G with gxi=yig x_i = y_i for i=1,…,ki = 1, \dots, k. The action is sharply kk-transitive if, moreover, this element gg is unique for all such pairs of kk-tuples.

Remarks

A 11-transitive action is a transitive action. A kk-transitive action is jj-transitive for every j≤kj \le k. For ∣Ω∣≥2\abs{\Omega} \ge 2, an action is 22-transitive if and only if it is transitive and the stabiliser GωG_\omega of one point ω\omega is transitive on Ω∖{ω}\Omega \setminus \set{\omega}.

Example: the symmetric group SnS_n is nn-transitive on {1,…,n}\set{1, \dots, n}, since any bijection between two orderings of distinct points extends to a permutation. For n≥3n \ge 3, the alternating group AnA_n is (n−2)(n-2)-transitive. Indeed, let σ∈Sn\sigma \in S_n do the job, and let τ\tau swap the two points not among y1,…,yn−2y_1, \dots, y_{n-2}. Then τσ\tau \sigma also does the job, and one of σ\sigma and τσ\tau \sigma is even. For a finite field 𝔽q\F_q, the maps x↦ax+bx \mapsto ax + b with a≠0a \ne 0 act sharply 22-transitively on 𝔽q\F_q.

Non-example: the eight symmetries of a square, acting on its corners 1,2,3,41, 2, 3, 4 in cyclic order. The action is transitive, but no symmetry sends the pair (1,2)(1, 2) of neighbouring corners to the pair (1,3)(1, 3) of opposite corners, so it is not 22-transitive.

Each 22-transitive action is primitive. Camille Jordan showed that for k≥4k \ge 4 the only finite sharply kk-transitive groups are SkS_k, Sk+1S_{k+1}, Ak+2A_{k+2}, and the Mathieu groups M11M_{11} for k=4k = 4 and M12M_{12} for k=5k = 5.
