Matrix exponential

Definition

Let K\mathbb{K} be R\R or C\C, and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over K\mathbb{K}. The matrix exponential of AA is the n×nn \times n matrix eA=exp⁡(A)=∑k=0∞1k!Ak=In+A+12A2+16A3+⋯ ,e^A = \exp(A) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{1}{k!} A^k = I_n + A + \frac{1}{2} A^2 + \frac{1}{6} A^3 + \cdots, with A0=InA^0 = I_n.

Remarks

The series converges for each matrix AA, entry by entry. For a diagonal matrix DD with entries did_i, eDe^D is diagonal with entries edie^{d_i}. If A=PDP−1A = P D P^{-1}, then eA=PeDP−1e^A = P e^D P^{-1}. The function x(t)=etAx0x(t) = e^{tA} x_0 solves the linear differential equation x′=Axx' = Ax with x(0)=x0x(0) = x_0.

Explanations

L1 human

The matrix exponential uses the familiar series of exe^x, with a matrix in place of the number xx. It is the main tool for solving systems of linear differential equations. For A=(0−tt0)A = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -t \\ t & 0 \end{pmatrix}, eAe^A is the rotation of the plane by the angle tt.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
