Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution
Definition
Let be the particle mass and the Boltzmann constant. Let , and . The Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution, or Maxwellian, with density , bulk velocity and temperature is the function , A local Maxwellian is a function in which , and depend on .
Remarks
The function is the density of the normal distribution on with mean and covariance . In the kinetic description of a gas, has number density , bulk velocity and temperature . For , the speed has the density on , after normalising by . Its most probable value is , its mean is , and its root mean square is .
Example: check of the temperature for . Each component has variance under , so , as required.
Non-example: the uniform distribution of velocities on a ball is not a Maxwellian, since it vanishes outside the ball while every Maxwellian is positive everywhere.
