Definition
Let be a measurable space, and let be the non-negative part of the extended real number line. A measure on is a function such that:
- .
- is countably additive: for every sequence of pairwise disjoint sets in ,
Remarks
The series in clause 2 has non-negative terms, so it has a value in . For , the Dirac measure , with if and otherwise, is a measure. For clause 2, the point lies in at most one of the disjoint sets , so both sides are or both are . On the power set of , the function with and for is not a measure. Clause 2 fails: , while . A measure is monotone, when , and countably subadditive, . A measure with is a probability measure.
