Metric outer measure

Builds on Outer measureMetric spaceInfimum

Definition

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space. For nonempty A,B⊆XA, B \subseteq X let d(A,B)=inf⁡{d(a,b):a∈A, b∈B}d(A, B) = \inf \set{ d(a, b) : a \in A, \ b \in B }, an infimum. A metric outer measure on XX is an outer measure μ∗\mu^* on XX such that μ∗(A∪B)=μ∗(A)+μ∗(B)whenever A,B⊆X are nonempty with d(A,B)>0.\mu^*(A \cup B) = \mu^*(A) + \mu^*(B) \quad \text{whenever } A, B \subseteq X \text{ are nonempty with } d(A, B) > 0.

Remarks

Example: Lebesgue outer measure λ∗\lambda^* on ℝn\R^n is a metric outer measure. Let d(A,B)=δ>0d(A, B) = \delta > 0. A cover of A∪BA \cup B by boxes can be refined into boxes of diameter less than δ\delta, and then no box meets both AA and BB. So the cover splits into a cover of AA and a cover of BB, which gives ≥\ge; subadditivity gives ≤\le. Non-example: on ℝ\R, put μ∗(∅)=0\mu^*(\varnothing) = 0 and μ∗(A)=1\mu^*(A) = 1 for every nonempty AA. This is an outer measure, but μ∗({0,1})=1≠μ∗({0})+μ∗({1})\mu^*(\set{0, 1}) = 1 \ne \mu^*(\set{0}) + \mu^*(\set{1}) although d({0},{1})=1>0d(\set{0}, \set{1}) = 1 > 0. Carathéodory's theorem on metric outer measures: an outer measure on a metric space is a metric outer measure if and only if every Borel set is Carathéodory measurable for it.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
