Real functions Classical inequalities Theorem
Minkowski inequality
Builds on Hölder's inequality
Statement
Let be a measure space and let . Let be measurable functions with and . Then
Remarks
Proof idea: the case follows from . For , first shows that the left side is finite. Then write and apply Hölder's inequality to each term with .
With the counting measure on it shows that the p-norm on R^n satisfies the triangle inequality. In general it is the triangle inequality for the norm of the Lp space .
The hypothesis is needed. For on with the counting measure, take and : the left side is and the right side is .

For a student
This inequality is what makes a norm for , so that is a normed space. Its proof is a short application of Hölder's inequality. For the inequality fails, and the quantity is then not a norm.
