Mohr–Coulomb theory
Definition
Let (the cohesion) and (the angle of internal friction) be material constants. Take tensile stresses as positive. For a plane through a point, let be the normal stress and the shear stress on it. The Mohr–Coulomb criterion states that the material fails at the point when some plane satisfies while no plane has . In terms of the principal stresses this is
Remarks
The stresses on all planes lie in the largest Mohr's circle, with centre and radius . This circle touches the line exactly when its radius equals the distance from its centre to the line. This is why the two forms agree. Example: in uniaxial compression, and , the criterion gives the compressive strength ; in uniaxial tension the strength is , which is smaller when . With it reduces to the Tresca criterion with . Non-example: a hydrostatic compression with never meets the criterion when . The left side is , and the right side is . The yield surface in principal stress space is an irregular hexagonal pyramid with axis the line , and the intermediate stress plays no role.
