Principal stresses
Summary
The principal stresses at a point are the eigenvalues of the symmetric Cauchy stress tensor , and the principal directions are its eigenvectors. On a plane perpendicular to a principal direction, the traction is purely normal, with no shear. The largest and smallest principal stresses bound the normal stress on every plane, and many failure criteria are stated in terms of them.
