Mohr's circle
Builds on Cauchy stress tensorPrincipal stresses
Definition
Consider a plane state of stress, given by the symmetric matrix of a Cauchy stress tensor in the plane. For the unit normal and the unit tangent , let the normal and shear stresses on the line with normal be Mohr's circle is the circle in the -plane with centre and radius , where As varies, the point runs over the whole circle.
Remarks
The identity follows from . The circle meets the axis at , the two principal stresses of the plane state, and the maximum shear stress is . For , , , one has and , so the principal stresses are and , and the maximum shear stress occurs at degrees. A point such as is not on this circle, so no orientation produces it. The sign convention for varies between texts, which flips the circle about the horizontal axis. In three dimensions the admissible points lie in the region between three circles built on the pairs of principal stresses.
