Definition

A monoidal category is a category ๐’ž\mathcal{C} together with the following data:

  1. a functor โŠ—โ€‰โฃ:๐’žร—๐’žโ†’๐’ž\otimes \colon \mathcal{C} \times \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{C} on the product category, called the tensor product;
  2. an object II, called the unit object;
  3. a natural isomorphism ฮฑ\alpha with components ฮฑA,B,Cโ€‰โฃ:(AโŠ—B)โŠ—Cโ†’AโŠ—(BโŠ—C)\alpha_{A,B,C} \colon (A \otimes B) \otimes C \to A \otimes (B \otimes C), called the associator;
  4. natural isomorphisms ฮป\lambda and ฯ\rho with components ฮปAโ€‰โฃ:IโŠ—Aโ†’A\lambda_A \colon I \otimes A \to A and ฯAโ€‰โฃ:AโŠ—Iโ†’A\rho_A \colon A \otimes I \to A, called the left and right unitors.

Here natural means natural as a natural transformation in each object variable. These data must satisfy two axioms for all objects A,B,C,DA, B, C, D:

  1. pentagon: (idโกAโŠ—ฮฑB,C,D)โˆ˜ฮฑA,BโŠ—C,Dโˆ˜(ฮฑA,B,CโŠ—idโกD)=ฮฑA,B,CโŠ—Dโˆ˜ฮฑAโŠ—B,C,D(\id_A \otimes \alpha_{B,C,D}) \circ \alpha_{A, B \otimes C, D} \circ (\alpha_{A,B,C} \otimes \id_D) = \alpha_{A,B,C \otimes D} \circ \alpha_{A \otimes B, C, D} as morphisms ((AโŠ—B)โŠ—C)โŠ—Dโ†’AโŠ—(BโŠ—(CโŠ—D))((A \otimes B) \otimes C) \otimes D \to A \otimes (B \otimes (C \otimes D));
  2. triangle: (idโกAโŠ—ฮปB)โˆ˜ฮฑA,I,B=ฯAโŠ—idโกB(\id_A \otimes \lambda_B) \circ \alpha_{A,I,B} = \rho_A \otimes \id_B as morphisms (AโŠ—I)โŠ—Bโ†’AโŠ—B(A \otimes I) \otimes B \to A \otimes B.

Remarks

Example: ๐’๐ž๐ญ\mathbf{Set} with the Cartesian product Aร—BA \times B, a one-point set I={โˆ—}I = \set{*}, ฮฑ((a,b),c)=(a,(b,c))\alpha((a,b),c) = (a,(b,c)), ฮป(โˆ—,a)=a\lambda(*,a) = a and ฯ(a,โˆ—)=a\rho(a,*) = a. Both sides of the pentagon send (((a,b),c),d)(((a,b),c),d) to (a,(b,(c,d)))(a,(b,(c,d))), and both sides of the triangle send ((a,โˆ—),b)((a,*),b) to (a,b)(a,b). Non-example: on the category of โ„\R-vector spaces with โŠ—\otimes the usual tensor product, take ฮฑ\alpha to be โˆ’1-1 times the usual associator and the usual unitors. For nonzero spaces the pentagon then fails: its left side contains three copies of ฮฑ\alpha and its right side two, so the two sides differ by the sign โˆ’1-1. A monoidal category is strict when ฮฑ\alpha, ฮป\lambda and ฯ\rho are identities.
