Monomorphism
Builds on CategoryMorphismInjective function
Definition
Let be a category and let be a morphism of . The morphism is a monomorphism if, for every object and all morphisms , the equality implies .
Remarks
Equivalently, for every object the map , , is injective. One writes , or says that is monic. Example: in the category of sets, every injective function is a monomorphism. If , then for each , so by injectivity. Non-example: the map is not a monomorphism. The two maps with and satisfy but . Every isomorphism is a monomorphism, and a composite of monomorphisms is a monomorphism. If is a monomorphism, then is a monomorphism.
