Definition

Let pp be a prime and let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer. Let BPBP be the Brown–Peterson spectrum at pp, a summand of pp-local complex cobordism, with coefficient ring BP∗=ℤ(p)[v1,v2,… ]BP_* = \Z_{(p)}[v_1, v_2, \dots] and ∣vi∣=2(pi−1)\abs{v_i} = 2(p^i - 1). The Morava K-theory K(n)K(n) at pp is the spectrum obtained from BPBP in two steps:

  1. Kill the elements p,v1,…,vn−1,vn+1,vn+2,…p, v_1, \dots, v_{n-1}, v_{n+1}, v_{n+2}, \dots by iterated cofibre sequences (the Baas–Sullivan construction).
  2. Invert vnv_n by a homotopy colimit along multiplication by vnv_n.

Its coefficient ring is K(n)∗=π∗K(n)=𝔽p[vn,vn−1],∣vn∣=2(pn−1),K(n)_* = \pi_* K(n) = \F_p[v_n, v_n^{-1}], \qquad \abs{v_n} = 2(p^n - 1), where 𝔽p\F_p is the finite field with pp elements. The Morava K-theory of a space or spectrum XX is the generalized cohomology theory K(n)∗(X)K(n)^*(X) represented by K(n)K(n), together with the homology theory K(n)∗(X)K(n)_*(X).

Remarks

K(n)K(n) is a ring spectrum and is complex oriented. Its formal group law can be chosen with pp-series [p](x)=vnxpn[p](x) = v_n x^{p^n}, so it has height nn. Every graded module over K(n)∗K(n)_* is free, since K(n)∗K(n)_* is a graded field. This gives, for spaces XX and YY, a Künneth isomorphism K(n)∗(X×Y)≅K(n)∗(X)⊗K(n)∗K(n)∗(Y)K(n)_*(X \times Y) \cong K(n)_*(X) \otimes_{K(n)_*} K(n)_*(Y). The theory K(n)K(n) is 2(pn−1)2(p^n - 1)-periodic. By convention K(0)K(0) is rational cohomology and K(∞)K(\infty) is mod pp cohomology.

Example: for p=2p = 2 and n=1n = 1, mod 22 complex K-theory KU/2KU/2 has coefficients 𝔽2[u,u−1]\F_2[u, u^{-1}] with ∣u∣=2=2(21−1)\abs{u} = 2 = 2(2^1 - 1). Its formal group law is the multiplicative one, whose 22-series is ux2u x^2 modulo 22. So KU/2KU/2 is a model of K(1)K(1) at 22.

Non-example: for an odd prime pp, the spectrum KU/pKU/p is not K(1)K(1). Its coefficients 𝔽p[u,u−1]\F_p[u, u^{-1}] have a unit in degree 22, while v1v_1 has degree 2(p−1)>22(p - 1) > 2. In fact KU/pKU/p splits as a sum of p−1p - 1 suspensions of K(1)K(1).
