Definition

Let MM be an LL-structure that is ℵ0\aleph_0-saturated, and let φ(xˉ)\varphi(\bar{x}) be an LL-formula with parameters from MM. Write φ(M)\varphi(M) for the definable set of tuples of MM that satisfy φ\varphi. For each ordinal α\alpha, the relation RM(φ)≥α\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) \ge \alpha is defined by induction on α\alpha:

  1. RM(φ)≥0\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) \ge 0 if φ(M)\varphi(M) is nonempty;
  2. RM(φ)≥α+1\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) \ge \alpha + 1 if there are formulas ψ0,ψ1,…\psi_0, \psi_1, \dots with parameters from MM whose sets ψi(M)\psi_i(M) are pairwise disjoint subsets of φ(M)\varphi(M) with RM(ψi)≥α\mathrm{RM}(\psi_i) \ge \alpha;
  3. for a limit ordinal α\alpha, RM(φ)≥α\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) \ge \alpha if RM(φ)≥β\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) \ge \beta for every β<α\beta < \alpha.

The Morley rank RM(φ)\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) is −1-1 if φ(M)\varphi(M) is empty. Otherwise it is the largest ordinal α\alpha with RM(φ)≥α\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) \ge \alpha if one exists, and ∞\infty if RM(φ)≥α\mathrm{RM}(\varphi) \ge \alpha for every ordinal α\alpha. For an arbitrary LL-structure NN and a formula with parameters from NN, the Morley rank is computed in an ℵ0\aleph_0-saturated elementary extension of NN. It does not depend on the choice of the extension.

Remarks

Example: in an algebraically closed field KK, the formula x=xx = x in one variable has Morley rank 11. The singletons {a}\set{a} for distinct a∈Ka \in K are infinitely many disjoint sets of rank 00, so the rank is at least 11. By quantifier elimination every definable subset of KK is finite or cofinite, so no two disjoint definable subsets are both infinite. A set of rank at least 11 is infinite, so the rank of x=xx = x is not at least 22. More generally, in KnK^n the Morley rank of an irreducible variety is its Krull dimension.

Non-example: in the theory of dense linear orders without endpoints, the formula x=xx = x has Morley rank ∞\infty. The rank of an open interval is at least α\alpha for every α\alpha, by induction, since an interval contains infinitely many pairwise disjoint open intervals.

A complete theory TT in a countable signature is ω\omega-stable, a strong form of stability, if and only if every formula has Morley rank less than ∞\infty.
