definition

Multiplication by a matrix as a linear map

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF. The linear map of multiplication by AA is LA ⁣:Fn→Fm,LA(x)=Ax,L_A \colon F^n \to F^m, \qquad L_A(x) = Ax, where AxAx is the matrix–vector product.

Remarks

The map LAL_A is linear, because A(x+y)=Ax+AyA(x + y) = Ax + Ay and A(cx)=c AxA(cx) = c\, Ax. Its matrix in the standard bases is AA, because LA(ej)L_A(e_j) is column jj of AA. Each linear map Fn→FmF^n \to F^m equals LAL_A for exactly one matrix AA. The kernel of LAL_A is the null space of AA, and its image is the column space of AA.

Explanations

L1 human

Multiplying vectors by a fixed matrix is a linear map. The matrix (2003)\begin{pmatrix} 2 & 0 \\ 0 & 3 \end{pmatrix} stretches the xx-direction by 22 and the yy-direction by 33. Every linear map between coordinate spaces is of this kind.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
