Definition
Let be a Hilbert space and let be the algebra of bounded operators on . A nest on is a family of closed linear subspaces of such that:
- and ;
- is a chain under inclusion: for , or ;
- is complete: for every subfamily, the intersection and the closed linear span of its members belong to .
The nest algebra of is the set of operators for which every member of is an invariant subspace.
Remarks
Example: let with standard basis , and let consist of and for . A matrix maps each into itself exactly when for all , that is, when is upper triangular, so is the algebra of upper triangular matrices. Non-example: in , the family satisfies clauses 1 and 3 but not clause 2. Indeed and are not comparable. The operators leaving this family invariant are the diagonal matrices. The diagonal algebra is not a nest algebra at all, since the nests on give only and algebras of dimension . Every nest algebra is weakly closed, contains the identity, and is reflexive.
