Definition

Let kk be a field and VV a vector space over kk. Let c ⁣:V⊗V→V⊗Vc \colon V \otimes V \to V \otimes V be an invertible linear map that satisfies the braid relation c12c23c12=c23c12c23c_{12} c_{23} c_{12} = c_{23} c_{12} c_{23} on V⊗3V^{\otimes 3}, the braid form of the Yang–Baxter equation. The pair (V,c)(V, c) is a braided vector space. For n≥2n \ge 2 the braid group BnB_n acts on V⊗nV^{\otimes n}, the generator σi\sigma_i acting as cc on the factors ii and i+1i+1. Let ss be a permutation in the symmetric group SnS_n, and take a reduced expression of ss in the simple transpositions. Replace each transposition (i i+1)(i\ i{+}1) by σi\sigma_i, and let csc_s be the action of the resulting element of BnB_n. The quantum symmetrizer is Ωn=∑s∈Sncs\Omega_n = \sum_{s \in S_n} c_s. The Nichols algebra of (V,c)(V, c) is 𝔅(V)=T(V)/⨁n≥2ker⁡Ωn,\mathfrak{B}(V) = T(V) \big/ \bigoplus_{n \ge 2} \ker \Omega_n, where T(V)T(V) is the tensor algebra of VV.

Remarks

The lift csc_s does not depend on the reduced expression, by Matsumoto's theorem, and ⨁n≥2ker⁡Ωn\bigoplus_{n \ge 2} \ker \Omega_n is a graded two-sided ideal of T(V)T(V). Example: let V=kxV = kx be one-dimensional with c(x⊗x)=q x⊗xc(x \otimes x) = q\, x \otimes x, where q≠1q \ne 1 is a root of unity of order N≥2N \ge 2. Each csc_s multiplies x⊗nx^{\otimes n} by qℓ(s)q^{\ell(s)}, with ℓ(s)\ell(s) the length of ss, so Ωn(x⊗n)=(n)q! x⊗n\Omega_n(x^{\otimes n}) = (n)_q!\, x^{\otimes n}, where (m)q=1+q+⋯+qm−1(m)_q = 1 + q + \cdots + q^{m-1}. This is zero exactly when n≥Nn \ge N, so 𝔅(V)=k[x]/(xN)\mathfrak{B}(V) = k[x]/(x^N). Non-example: for cc the flip and dim⁡V≥2\dim V \ge 2, the tensor algebra T(V)T(V) itself is not the Nichols algebra, because Ω2(u⊗v−v⊗u)=0\Omega_2(u \otimes v - v \otimes u) = 0 for u,v∈Vu, v \in V, so uv−vuuv - vu is zero in 𝔅(V)\mathfrak{B}(V). If char⁡k=0\operatorname{char} k = 0, then 𝔅(V)\mathfrak{B}(V) is the symmetric algebra of VV for cc the flip, and the exterior algebra of VV for cc minus the flip. Equivalently, 𝔅(V)\mathfrak{B}(V) is the graded braided Hopf algebra ⨁n≥0R(n)\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} R(n) with R(0)=kR(0) = k and R(1)=VR(1) = V that is generated by VV and whose primitive elements are exactly VV.
