Nilpotent endomorphism

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism. The map TT is nilpotent when Tk=0T^k = 0 for some integer k≥1k \ge 1. The least such kk is the index of TT.

Remarks

If dim⁡V=n\dim V = n is finite and TT is nilpotent, then Tn=0T^n = 0. In finite dimensions, TT is nilpotent if and only if its characteristic polynomial is tnt^n. Over an algebraically closed field, this means that 00 is its only eigenvalue. A matrix is nilpotent when its map is nilpotent, see nilpotent matrix. The derivative on the space of polynomials of degree less than nn is nilpotent.

Explanations

L1 human

A nilpotent map destroys everything after a few steps. Each application pushes vectors further towards zero, until they vanish. The shift e1↦0e_1 \mapsto 0, e2↦e1e_2 \mapsto e_1, e3↦e2e_3 \mapsto e_2 in F3F^3 is nilpotent of index 33.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
