Definition
Let be a ring with identity, and let be the polynomial ring in one variable. Let be an integer for which the K-group is defined. Let be the ring homomorphism with that is the identity on . The group is the kernel of the induced homomorphism
Remarks
The inclusion followed by is the identity of . So is a direct summand of , and The construction is a functor of .
Example: let be a field and . The element is a unit of the commutative ring , with inverse . The determinant sends the class of to , so the class is not zero. Since , the class of is a nonzero element of .
Non-example: for a regular Noetherian ring , such as a field or , the map is an isomorphism, so for all . Then has no part outside .
Some authors write as the cokernel of ; it is isomorphic to the kernel above by the splitting.
