Non-Archimedean absolute value
Builds on FieldReal numbersNormed field
Definition
Let be a field. A non-Archimedean absolute value on is a map such that:
- for all , and if and only if .
- for all .
- for all .
Clause 3 is the strong triangle inequality.
Remarks
Clause 3 implies the triangle inequality, so a non-Archimedean absolute value is an absolute value, and is a normed field. Example: for a prime , the p-adic absolute value on , given by and , is non-Archimedean. Clause 2 is , and clause 3 follows from . Non-example: the usual absolute value on satisfies clauses 1 and 2 but fails clause 3, since . An absolute value on is non-Archimedean if and only if for all integers . If , then . For , the rule turns a valuation with values in into a non-Archimedean absolute value, and every non-Archimedean absolute value arises this way.
