counterexample

Non-commutativity of matrix multiplication

Counterexample

Let A=(0100)A = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} and B=(0010)B = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 0 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, as real 2×22 \times 2 matrices. Then AB=(1000),BA=(0001).AB = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad BA = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}. Thus AB≠BAAB \ne BA. This shows that matrix multiplication of n×nn \times n matrices is not commutative for n=2n = 2.

Remarks

The same example, extended with zero rows and zero columns, shows that Mn(R)M_n(R) is not commutative for each n≥2n \ge 2 and each nonzero ring RR. Two matrices AA and BB with AB=BAAB = BA are said to commute. Some pairs commute, for example a matrix and the identity matrix, or two diagonal matrices.

Explanations

L1 human

For numbers, 2⋅3=3⋅22 \cdot 3 = 3 \cdot 2, but for matrices the order of the factors matters. Here ABAB and BABA are different matrices. A reason is that ABAB means "first apply BB, then AA", and two actions done in a different order can give different results.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • edge refutes or not_instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
