Noncommutative ring

Builds on Ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring. The ring RR is noncommutative if there are elements a,b∈Ra, b \in R with ab≠baab \ne ba.

Remarks

Example: the ring M2(ℝ)M_2(\R) of 2×22 \times 2 real matrices is noncommutative. With E12E_{12} the matrix with 11 in position (1,2)(1,2) and 00 elsewhere, and E21E_{21} defined likewise, one has E12E21=E11≠E22=E21E12E_{12} E_{21} = E_{11} \ne E_{22} = E_{21} E_{12}. Non-example: the ring ℤ\Z is not noncommutative, since ab=baab = ba for all integers a,ba, b. Many authors use "noncommutative ring" for a ring that is not assumed to be commutative. In that use, commutative rings are allowed as special cases.
