Sequences, series, summability Definition
Nörlund mean
Definition
Let be a sequence of real numbers with and for all , and put . Let be a sequence of complex numbers. The Nörlund means of with respect to are The sequence is summable to if . A series is summable to if the sequence of its partial sums is.
Remarks
Example: for for all , one has and , the Cesàro mean.
The method is regular, that is, it sends every convergent sequence to its limit, if and only if .
Non-example of regularity: for one has and . For the sequence , which converges to , one gets . So this Nörlund method is not regular. The condition is needed so that every is positive and the means are defined.
