Normalizer of a Lie subalgebra

Builds on Lie algebraLie subalgebra

Definition

Let 𝔀\mathfrak g be a Lie algebra over a field kk and let 𝔨\mathfrak k be a Lie subalgebra of 𝔀\mathfrak g. The normalizer of 𝔨\mathfrak k in 𝔀\mathfrak g is N𝔀(𝔨)={xβˆˆπ”€:[x,y]βˆˆπ”¨Β forΒ allΒ yβˆˆπ”¨}.N_{\mathfrak g}(\mathfrak k) = \set{x \in \mathfrak g : [x, y] \in \mathfrak k \text{ for all } y \in \mathfrak k}.

Remarks

N𝔀(𝔨)N_{\mathfrak g}(\mathfrak k) is a subalgebra of 𝔀\mathfrak g, by the Jacobi identity. It contains 𝔨\mathfrak k, and 𝔨\mathfrak k is an ideal of it. It is the largest subalgebra of 𝔀\mathfrak g with this property. 𝔨\mathfrak k is self-normalizing if N𝔀(𝔨)=𝔨N_{\mathfrak g}(\mathfrak k) = \mathfrak k.

Example: let 𝔀=𝔰𝔩2(k)\mathfrak g = \mathfrak{sl}_2(k) with char⁑kβ‰ 2\operatorname{char} k \ne 2, basis e,h,fe, h, f, and [h,e]=2e[h, e] = 2e, [h,f]=βˆ’2f[h, f] = -2f, [e,f]=h[e, f] = h. Let 𝔨=kh\mathfrak k = k h. For x=ae+bh+cfx = ae + bh + cf, one gets [x,h]=βˆ’2ae+2cf[x, h] = -2a e + 2c f, which lies in khk h only if a=c=0a = c = 0. So N𝔀(kh)=khN_{\mathfrak g}(k h) = k h, and khk h is self-normalizing.

Non-example: the element ee is not in N𝔀(kh)N_{\mathfrak g}(k h), because [e,h]=βˆ’2eβˆ‰kh[e, h] = -2e \notin k h.

If 𝔨\mathfrak k is an ideal of 𝔀\mathfrak g, then N𝔀(𝔨)=𝔀N_{\mathfrak g}(\mathfrak k) = \mathfrak g.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
