Normed field
Builds on FieldReal numbers
Definition
Let be a field. An absolute value on is a map such that:
- for all , and if and only if .
- for all .
- for all .
A normed field is a field together with an absolute value on . It is a metric space with the distance .
Remarks
Example: with the modulus is a normed field; clause 2 is , and clause 3 is the triangle inequality in the plane. Example: with the p-adic absolute value for a prime is a normed field. Example: every field with the trivial absolute value, for , is a normed field. Non-example: on , the map satisfies clauses 1 and 2 but fails clause 3, since . Clauses 1 and 2 give and . An absolute value that satisfies the stronger inequality is a non-Archimedean absolute value. A normed field is a topological field for the topology of its metric.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
